Testimonials

I would like to take this opportunity to thank your company and in particular your operatives, Mr Robert Brooks and Mr James Livesey, for the high quality of workmanship and technical expertise provided at Caerphilly Castle.

The decision to introduce lead hoppers and rainwater downpipes to the external elevations of the Inner East Gatehouse was not one taken lightly by the client, Cadw; however the quality of the leadwork provided has only served to add to the grandeur of this monument. Your subsequent addition of the cast astragals to each downpipe following the mason’s completion of the dished stone channels at ground level has further complimented the overall appearance of the gatehouse.

The attention to detail and technical skills demonstrated by both Robert and James was first class. The advice offered to me, as Contract Administrator, and Cadw’s architects helped address several issues encountered on site during the course of the works and in particular the challenging support requirements for the 3.5 m long Code 6 curved hopper on the east elevation. The finished work is of the highest quality and stands as testament of the need to promote and nurture these essential building crafts.

I would not hesitate to recommend your company and, in particular the above named operatives, for any future works in the historic and built environment and I look forward to working with your company again in the near future.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you and your operatives, Kevin McEnaney and Andrew Lally, for the high quality of lead work undertaken at Castell Coch. This project, although small in area, has been critical in eliminating the ingress of rainwater affecting the high quality decorative finishes in the rooms both adjacent and below the balcony area. The attention to detail and technical skills demonstrated by both Kevin and Andrew was exemplary and the advice offered to me as Contract Administrator and Cadw’s architects helped address several problems encountered on site during the course of the works.

The finished work is of the highest standard and provides the castle’s visitors with a fine example of sand cast sheet lead covering to the bedroom’s balcony and upstand parapet in keeping with its historic setting.

I would not hesitate to recommend your company and, in particular the above named operatives, for any future works in the historic and built environment and I look forward to working with your company again in the near future.

I’ve been meaning to write to you for some time regarding the work carried out by you at the above. I recently inspected the whole of the monument, as part of our maintenance regime, and am pleased to confirm that the above works appear to have been very effective. As you know we had been experiencing water ingress from Lady Bute’s balcony down into the ceiling of the Minstrel’s Gallery below which caused considerable damage to its plasterwork and decorated surfaces. Through your efforts, we seem to be getting on top of the problem allowing remedial works to commence.
It couldn’t have been easy for your operatives, from memory Andrew Lally and Kevin McEnaney, to work in such a confined space but through their skills and application, they succeeded in achieving a first class result. While I, as contract architect, can produce a specification, the real skills are in managing the situation on site. Both Andrew and Kevin had a good appreciation of our aspirations but often made well balanced views on how a better outcome could be achieved. It may be worth mentioning, also, that they conducted themselves, on site, in an exemplary manner. The site custodians were very complimentary about their approach and of the way in which they conducted themselves in front of visitors.
As I am expected to conform to the guidelines set out by the Welsh Assembly Government, I cannot provide an actual recommendation for companies or practices. However, I would be extremely happy to work with your company again on future contracts, knowing that you hold the necessary skills in providing first class workmanship and, particularly, with regard to work within historic structures.
